[edit] Description
The Yungang Grottoes is located in Datong city, Shanxi Province. Known for its long history, large-scale, rich and fine carvings, the grottoes area extended about 1 km from east to west along Wuzhou Mountain, 16 km to the west of Datong. It has a collection of 252 caves and about 51,000 statues, representing the outstanding achievement of Buddhist cave art in China during the 5th and 6th centuries. The Five Caves (Caves 16-20) created by monk Tan Yao [昙曜], with their strict unity of layout and design, is a classical masterpiece of the first peak of Chinese Buddhist art.
All caves and statues are of different looks with a variety of vivid characters, such as Buddha, Bodhisattva, etc. Other colorful and dazzling carvings include ancient musical instruments such as harp, Pai Hsiao, wicker horn and lute.
The art work comes with unique styles by integrating the traditional sculpture techniques from Han Dynasty and the Gandhara art elements. Today Yungang Grottoes attract hundreds and thousands of visitor every year, and serves as a place to understand and study ancient stone carving and sculpture history, as well as ancient architecture, music and religion. It's a symbol and evidence of the friendship and ancient cultural exchange between people from east and west.
