[edit] Overview

Yichang (zh:宜昌) is known as "Throat between Sichuan and Hubei", a transportation hub along the Yangtze river linking west Hubei and east Sichuan. Since ancient times it has been important river port, where the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River are divided.

[edit] History

In ancient times Yichang was known as Yiling. There are historical records telling that in the year 278 BC during the Warring States period the Qin general Bai Qi set fire to Yiling. Yichang was also the site of a famous battle during the Three Kingdoms era, the Battle of Yiling. Church

In 1876, under the Qing Emperor Guangxu, Yichang was opened to foreign trade as a trading port after the Second Opium War with Britain. The imperial government set up a navigation company there. Wharves were built as well, but before 1949 the wharf area was only less than half a kilometer in length. After 1949, more than 50 wharves have been constructed at the port so that its wharf area is now over 15 km long. There are the shiplocks at Gezhouba Water Control Project.

During WWII when China was fighting with Japan, an encounter battle (Hui Zhan) happened in the area. --from wikipedia.org

[edit] Getting in & Getting out

Most people get in by boat. There is an airport located 40min driving out of the city and a main bus station. There are further bus stations at the docks where the river cruises end/start. There is also a train station.

Most boats arrive around 1-1.30pm at the docks from where it is possible to catch a bus to Wuhan the same night which for most people might be the most interesting option of getting out. The airport is fairly small but you can fly to: Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'An, Chengdu and lots more destinations in China, though be careful when planning, as smaller destination or less interesting ones (like Xi'An) aren't served every day. Taxi prices to the airport vary from 60-80, there is also a bus going out there, find out in city when and from where it leaves. --form wikitravel.org

[edit] Getting Around

[edit] By Public Bus

Lots of buses, the town is not that big so going by foot is an option. If you want to go to the 'Three Visitors Cave' take bus No.10 leaving at the main Square (hourly or half hourly).

[edit] By Tour Bus

[edit] By Metro

[edit] By Taxi & Rental Car

A taxi ride out there relies on your bargain skills: ¥10-20, make sure not to pay more, didn't hear of anyone who got driven out there by meter but estimated ¥10-15.

Taxi may or may not use the meter, if you stay in the downtown limits, rides should not exceed ¥10, else you are being ripped off. --form wikitravel.org
