Travel By Air

When you travel by air in China, you will pleasantly find that the planes are often newer than those in western countries. That's because China's aviation industry is relatively young, and many airlines have just bought (and are still buying) the new planes in the last several years.

China's air safety record and service have improved significantly since early 1990s according to the Wall Street Journal (How China Turned Around A Dismal Air-Safety Record). For much of the 1990s, Chinese airlines were arguably the worlds most dangerous, beset by persistent pilot errors, unreliable maintenance and erratic government oversight. Today, China is an acclaimed global leader in air safety. Despite frequent double-digit annual growth in the number of hours its airlines fly, their most recent fatal-accident rates are lower than America's and Europe's.
