Tongtian Rock is Located 10 kilometers northwest of the Ganzhou City proper, the Tongtian Rock is reputed as the treasury of the ancient grotto art in South China. It holds the largest complex of cliff grottos of Jiangxi Province, with entirely 279 stone cases in cliffside and 359 stone Buddhas, most of which are engraved during the Tang and Song dynasties. Since the Song dynasty, cliffside inscriptions of poets and scholars had existed over nine hundred years. Perfectly set off by the surrounding natural sceneries, Tongtian Rock is an ever pleasant summer resort of Ganzhou. Tongtian Rock has a cave with a hole leading to the cliff's summit. With over 300 statues of Buddha, and the cliff has been a famous place for Buddhists Originally, there were 116 inscriptions at Tongtian Rock and Wanggui Cliff, but only 97 remain. The inscriptions are not only records of the local history but also treasures of the ancient calligraphic arts. Altogether, the Tongtian Rock Scenic Area has 348 statues. Except for the several standing Buddha sculptures at Cuiwei Rock carved in the Tang dynasty, the remainders were carved in the Song dynasty. The sculptures are representatives of the art of carving in China.
