One of the largest Buddhist temples in eastern China, the Tianning Temple is just a few blocks from the downtown of Changzhou. It's also nearby from the city's main historic parks and a historic pagoda. The temple was founded almost 1,300 years ago, and as grown bigger and bigger over the centuries. The present temple complex dates from the Qing dynasty, and it spreads over several city blocks. The first hall of the temple holds one of its artistic highlights - four giant guardian god statues. Each almost 8 meters tall, the complicated patterns of their rich brocade robes are painted beautifully, while their poses and expressions are an once elegant and commanding. The courtyards of the temple are planted with many different kinds of trees and shrubs, their green leaves contrasting beautifully with the saffron yellow temple walls, the twittering of the birds in their leaves interweaving with the chants of the monks.

The city enjoys a humid monsoon climate at the transition area between subtropical and temperate zones. The four seasons varies greatly during a year. Spring and autumn are moderate, while summer and winter go extremely opposite. Summer is torrid, but gathers majority of the rainfall. The plum rain period lasts from June to July. Also during the summer, rainstorm and typhoon are more likely to happen. The best travel time is spring and autumn.
