[edit] Description
The Terracotta Army is located at the northern piedmont of Lishan Mountain 7.5 kilometers east of Lingtong County in Shaanxi Province and 37.5 kilometers west of Xi'an City.
The Terracotta Army was discovered in 1974 and is only a short distance away from the Qinshihuang Mausoleum. The army was there to defend the tomb. The tomb itself, occupying some 400 square meters, is still not opened.
There are four large pits built on site covering a total area of about sixty square kilometers. Pit #1 contains chariots and ranks of six thousand soldiers. Pit #2 was occupied by fourteen hundred figures of cavalrymen, horses and infantrymen, along with ninety wooden chariots. Pit #3 is the command post. A fourth pit was discovered empty, presumably left incomplete on the death of Emperor Qin Shihuang.
There are over 7000 life sized Terra-Cotta soldiers and 1000 have been preserved. There are generals, archers, horses, foot soldier and more. Every soldier had individual features and his own personality.
Since the discovery of Qin Terra-Cotta figures, there have been as many as 50 million visitors to the museum, including presidents and officers from more than one hundred different countries. Qin Terra-Cotta warriors and horses were also exhibited in many foreign countries, where they got warm welcome by the local people. Today "the Eighth Wonder of the World" has almost become synonym of the Terra-Cotta warriors and horses.
[edit] History
In March 1974, a group of local peasant farmers digging a well stumbled upon what was to become one of the most important archaeological findings of the 20th century when they unearthed fragments of a life-sized Terra-Cotta Warrior. It was later found to be Emperor Qin's Terracotta army, over 2000 years old, and completely forgotten by the people of China before.
On October 1st of 1979, the Museum of Qin Shihuang Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses was officially established.
