[edit] Overview

Taiyuan is the capital of Shanxi Province. Its short name is Bing (并), and is also called as Bingzhou (并州). The city was first established as Jinyang (晋阳) in 497 B.C. until renamed to Taiyuan during the Qin Dynasty.

Taiyuan lies on the bank of Fenhe River, and is surrounded by mountains on the three sides.

[edit] History

Taiyuan has a long history of 2500 years. It just celebrated its 2500th birthday in 2003 (497 B.C.-2003).

Taiyuan was originally established as Jinyang (晋阳) in late Spring and Autumn Period in the 15th year of Jindinggong rule (晋定公), or 497 B.C.. It was once used as the capital city of Zhao State during the Warring States Period.

China was divided into 36 states after Emperor Qin unified China. Taiyuan State was one of the 36 original states, and Jinyang was the state capital at that time. It continued to serve as the state capital of Bingzhou during the Han Dynasty, and the capital of Eastern Wei (东魏) and Northern Qi (北齐) during the Northern and Southern Dynasties.

Taiyuan was known as the "Northern Capital", and second only to Chang'an (the Capital) and Luoyang (the Eastern Capital) during the Sui Dynasty. The city was then expanded several times by several Emperor of the early Tang Dynasty. Later Taiyuan served as the capitals or founding cities of several states such as Late Tang (后唐) [923 AD – 936 AD], Late Jin (后晋) [936 AD – 946 AD], Late Han (后汉) [947 AD – 950 AD] and Northen Han (北汉) during the war-ridden Five Dynasties and Ten States era.

Jinyang city was completely destroyed in 979, when Northen Han was conquered by the Song Dynasty. Three years later, the new Taiyuan was established about 20km to the north of the ancient city site. Taiyuan suffered horrific losses in the later war-ridden Jin and Yuan Dynasties.

The city was expanded and the city wall was reconstructed in early Ming Dynasty (1368–1644). It became the capital of Shanxi and enjoyed rapid economic development during the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1644–1911).
