Covering an area of 189 hectares, Shenyang Botanical Garden is located in Dongling District, about 10 km, or 6.12 miles, to the east of downtown Shenyang. The garden was built in 1959, and has served as one of Shenyang's showcase attractions. This exceptionally green patch of land hosts 20 specialized botanical gardens with more than 1,700 species of flowers, trees, and shrubs, including rare plants and threatened plants from northeast, northwest China such as Inner Mongolia. It is regarded as the one with the most types of plants in northeast China.

The garden is cut into two parts by the Fushun Railway. The northern part is covered by the Steam Locomotive Museum, hotels and the area for growing plants. And the southern part contains 20 small gardens, the Cuihu Lake, and the Xing-Xing Paradise. Those 20 small gardens carry such namesakes as "Peony Garden", "Lilac Garden", "Azalea Garden", "Rose Garden", etc. In addition to beautiful flowers and emerald green trees, there are numerous stylish bridges connecting chains of undulating hills, elegant pavilions and breeze-rippled ponds.

The garden hosts large-scale annual flower shows such as the Tulip Show on May Day, the Peony Show on June 1st, the exhibition of lily on July 1st and the exhibition of ground cover chrysanthemum on November 1st.

The 2006 International Horticultural Expo was held here. Once the expo was finished, many of the exhibits continued to be on display as part of the garden's permanent collection, including the Lily Tower with its incredible panoramas and an amusement park complete with roller coasters.

Shenyang Botanical Garden was a national AAAAA scenic area designated by the National Tourism Administration in 2007.
