[edit] History
Shenyang is a well-known city with historical and cultural significance. It boasts about 1100 above-ground and underground cultural relics. Shenyang adopted its current name because of its location on the north bank of the Hunhe River (known as Shenshui in ancient times). According to the research findings from the Xinle Archaeological Site, people lived on this land as early as 7200 years ago. The city of Shenyang has a history of over 2300 years when Qin Kai established the Hou City here to protect its border at around 300 B.C. Shenyang has long been known as "the birthplace of one dynasty and the capital for two emperors". In 1625, Nuerhachi, the first emperor of Qing dynasty, moved its capital to here, and renamed Shenyang as Shengjing. In 1636, Huangtaiji, the second emperor of Qing Dynasty, changed the reigning title into Qing Dynasty. In 1644, Shenyjing was demoted as the secondary capital when Beijing became the capital after the soldiers of Qing Dynasty entered the Shanhaiguan Pass. In 1651, Fengtian Prefecture was established here. In 1945, Shenyjing was renamed back to Shenyang.
