Shanhaiguan (or Shanhai Pass) is located in Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province, in Northeast China. It's known as "First Pass Under Heaven", the east-most point of the Great Wall, "Old Dragon's Head", and is one of the three most important passes of the Great Wall (the other two are Jiayuguan and Juyongguan). It serves as the "throat" to enter Northeast China as many traffics must pass through this area to Northeast China.
The pass was constructed in 1381 by General Xu Da of Ming Dynasty when he built this section of the Great Wall. Shanhaiguan derives its name from its location to the north of the Yanshan Mountains, and to the south of the Bohai Bay.
The construction of the pass lasted 263 years, almost covered the whole period of the Ming Dynasty. Covering about an area of 230 hectares, the city was chained together by seven small satellite cities with the Great Wall serving as the defense line.
Shanhaiguan's street layout resembles very much a chess board. The streets and alleys are lined neatly in two directions, linking numerous traditional houses with distinguished local architecture. The city is enclosed by a city wall and a wide, deep moat at the four sides.
Today Shanhaiguan serves as a popular tourist destination, and a famous summer resort because of cool summer weather.

- Visitors can easily get to Shanhaiguan from either Qinhuangdao City or Beidaihe district by public bus lines # 34 or 25, or taxis.

Shanhaiguan scenic area is located in Qinhuangdao, an ideal summer resort known for its cool summer. The best time to visit Beidaihe is from May-October, and to visit other areas is from June to August. The best time for bird-watching is the bird migration seasons of spring and autumn.
