[edit] Description

Sera Monastery (色拉寺) is about five kilometers north of Lhasa. It is one of the oldest original structures dedicated to the Gelugpa branch of Tibetan Buddhism. The monks here famously debate Buddhist doctrine in a distinctive style with ritualized clapping and stamping to indicate starting and stopping points. You can experience this interesting routine in most afternoons at around 3:30. The hill behind Sera is the only celestial place near Lhasa where sky burials still take place. These are not advertised and not open to the public, and visitors should keep your distance and stay away from this extremely sacred act.

The recommended time to visit is 2 hours.

[edit] Direction
