Qinhuangdao is named after Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor in Chinese History, who is said to have looked for the immortals on an island in Qinhuangdao. Today Qinhuangdao is mainly an industrial city best known for its heavy industries such as glass manufacturing, aluminum processing, vehicle wheel production, gas turbine engine manufacturing, etc.

Boasting a history of more than one hundred years, Qinhuangdao is also the main port of Hebei province.

Qinhuangdao local government administers Beidaihe, Shanhaiguan, and Haigang District, as well as 4 additional Manchu Autonomous Counties: Funing, Changli, Lulong, and Qinglong. It covers a total area of 7,812.4 square kilometers, the population of 2.76 million.

Qinhuangdao is an ideal summer resort. It is located in the temperate monsoon zone with a mild climate, never too dry or too muggy. The famous Beidaihe Resort is an ideal place for year-round vacation. Qinhuangdao has no cold winter and hot summer. The yearly average temperature is about 10 ℃.

The best time to visit Beidaihe Resort is from May to October, and the best time to visit other places in Qinhuangdao is June through August. The best time for bird-watch is spring and fall season.

Qinhuangdao is the only city in China named after one of its emperors. In 215 B.C., Qin Shihuang (259-210 B.C.), the first Emperor of Qin, arrived here on his fourth inspection journey. He sent Lu Sheng from Yan State and Han Zhong (a necromancer) out to the sea to beg the gods to let him live forever.

Because of its strategic location as a "Throat to Beijing", Qinhuangdao's history is also filled with many wars. Famous wars include the one between Li Zicheng and Wu Sangui, the one between warlord Feng Guozhang and warlord Zhang Zuolin (Zhi-Feng War), the one between the brave Anti-Japanese Amalgamated Army of the Northeast fighting and the Japanese invaders.

The 260 kilometer-long Great Wall and 126 kilometer-long coastline has drawn many emperors, generals, scholars, and of course, today's tourists.

Qinhuangdao Shanhaiguan airport (秦皇岛山海关机场) is about 13 km away from the city center. THere are flights to Shanghai, Nanjing, Dalian, Yantai, Taiyuan, and Shijiazhuang every week.

Qinhuangdao has four railway stations: Qinhuangdao Station (秦皇岛站), Shanhaiguan Station (山海关站), Beidaihe Station (北戴河站), and Changli Station (昌黎站). Together they cover almost all of the City's main tourist destinations. All the trains from here going to the south (Beijing and Tianjin direction) originate from the Qinhuangdao Station, while the trains going to the north (Shenyang direction) from Qinhuangdao originate from Shanhaiguan Station. The tourist trains between Beijing and Qinhuangdao Y510/509 always stop at Beidaihe Station.

There are usually additional tourist trains added during the summer time. Shanhaiguan Station is only about 312 km, or 3.5 hours from Beijing, and most of the trains (about a dozen every day) from Beijing to Shenyang stop at Shanhaiguan Station.

• Qinhuangdao Seaside Passenger Station (海滨长途汽车站) has buses going to Beijing, Tianjin, Chengde, Zhengzhou, Shijiazhuang and other cities along the route.
• Qinhuangdao Long-distance Passenger Station (北环路长途汽车站) (北环路405号) has two buses to Shijiazhuang as well, leaving at 8:00 am and 8:15 am every morning. The trip takes about 6 hours.

• Tour Bus: Beijing Capital Bus Company and Beijing Taxi Company offer 4-5 day tour service to Qinhuangdao area. Their air-conditioned luxury bus usually costs more than a train ticket, but it's very convenient as they take care of the food, lodging and other sightseeing arrangements.

• Shuttles from Beijing airport are now available. There are 6 shuttles heading for Qinhuangdao between 9am and 7pm. The travel time is 3 hours and the fare is 126 RMB. Below is the timetable:
  • From Beijing Capital Airport (At across Gate #15 at the first floor of Terminal 2; or Gate #3 at the first floor of Terminal 3) to Qinhuangdao: 9:00, 11:00, 13:00, 15:00, 17 : 00; 19:00;
  • From Qinhuangdao (405 Beihuan Road (北环路405号)) to Beijing Capital Airport: 6:00, 8:00, 10:00, 14:00 ; 16:00, 18:00.

Qinhuangdao Port is a non-frozen port in North China. There is a ferry going to Dalian generally on every odd day, and coming back the second day. The ferry fare ranges from 69 yuan to 338 yuan depending the seat. The whole journey takes about 14 hours.

There are several public buses running between Shanhaiguan, Qinhuangdao, and Beidaihe. Shanhaiguan is 17 km from Qinhuangdao, and 30 km away from Beidaihe. Bus line #6 goes directly from Beidaihe railway station to Qinhuangdao railway station.

Taxi is very inexpensive, costing 5 RMB to start the ride, plus additional charges after first several miles.
