Yandang Mountain, located in Yueqing County in southeastern Zhejiang Province, is one of the ten most famous mountains in China. It gets its name because in autumn, wild geese always gather in the marshes around the lake at the top of the mountain.
Yandang Mountain is among the group of top-tier national scenic sites. With the good reputation in history as the No. 1 Mountain in Southeast China, it is often simply referred to as "the Famous Mountain Above the Sea".
The mountain covers an area of 450 square kilometers. It was formed from an ancient rhyolite volcano about 120 million years ago. It boasts 550 scenic sites and 8 scenic zones, among which Lingfeng Peak, Lingyan Rock and the Great Dragon Pond Waterfall are called as "Three Famous Scenic Sites of Yandang Mountain". The scenery is dominated by grotesque crags and beautiful waterfalls. There, mountain peaks often tower strikingly into clouds, presenting a spectacular view.
The splendor of Yandang became known in the early Tang Dynasty (618-907). It enjoyed greater fame after the first year (976) of the Taiping Xingguo reign in the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), when at least 18 ancient temples, 16 pavilions and 10 yards were built at that time. By the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), hundreds of grotesque peaks had got their names. Through ages after the Tang and Song dynasties, scholars traveled there and left behind many Cliffside Stone Carvings, making Yandang Mountain a great historical treasure house. Visitors can read more than 5000 poems and over 400 carved tablets on cliff surface. Pan Tianshou, the famous painter could not help writing the famous poem to praise the beauty of Yandang Mountain as: "It's steep and high that no one can imagine".
Often being praised for its unique and beautiful features such as "it can stand scrutiny in daytime, and it can thrill with joy at night", "Different positions, different sceneries" and "Tasting seafood while watching landscape", today the Yandang Mountain serves as a popular mountainous natural resort on the seaside.

Yandang Mountain is a space model of Cretaceous Period Caldera Volcano which was dissected by nature, and is a natural museum of rhyolite volcano. The international sudden phenomenon of caldera volcano in Mt. Yandang possesses the distinction in time and space, which has generality and representation during in huge volcano of West Pacific Ocean--Asia Continent Edge, which is a natural drill about researching on the process of the magma in the edge of continent impacting on the deeper geology.
