[edit] Description
Covering an area of 60 sq km, Mount Wuyishan (武夷山) is just 15 km south of Wuyi City, at the northern border of Fujian province with Jiangxi province.
Known as "Natural Arboretum" for its biological diversity, Mount Wuyishan is the most outstanding biodiversity conservation zone of Southeast China. Numerous types of tea are produced around Mount Wuyishan. Famous ones include Bohea tea, the Oolong tea, Lapsang souchong, and Da Hong Pao tea.
Mount Wuyishan joined UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1999 for its rich semi-tropical foliage and numerous waterfalls, and its ancient temples and buildings.
A very popular activity is to raft down the Nine Bend River followed by a visit to the "Thread of Sky" caves, where the narrowest walkway is only 30cm.
Must-see places include:
- Nine Bend Stream (九曲溪): The two-hour rafting excursion on two rafts strapped together, two pole-men, and two hours of commentary and poetry.
- Heavenly Tour Peak (天游峰): By far offers Wuyishan's best view of "The Ends of the Earth", a spectacular view of islands of mountains in a sea of clouds. The peak can be seen from the 3rd, 5th, and 6th bends in the Nine Bend Stream.
- Great King Peak: At the mouth of the Nine Bend Stream. It looks like an ancient Chinese official's hat.
- Jade Maiden Peak: One of Wuyishan's most celebrated landmark. "She resembles a maiden standing gracefully. The bare rock is smooth as skin. The grass and shrubbery on top are her hair. If you gaze at her reflection in the pool below, you'll see a beautiful, traditional maid, deep in thought, dreaming of a bright future.", as you will always hear from the tour guide.
