[edit] Description
Mount Wutaishan, (literally Mountain of Five Terraces), derives its name from its five "flat" top peaks . It is located in Xinzhou Region, northeast of Shanxi province, bordering Hebei province. Covering an area of almost 1100 square miles, it is regarded as the holiest of the four Buddhist holy mountains in China (the others are Mount Jiuhuashan(south), Mount Putuoshan (east), Mount Emeishan (west)).
Many temples in Mount Wutaishan were originally established during the Han Dynasty, but still most were built during the Tang Dynasty. These temples served as remote and peaceful places to store and study sacred texts that Buddhist scholars brought from India. In mordern days, numerous temples in Mount Wutaishan survived the Cultural Revolution relatively unscathed due to their remote locations. So it can be truely used as a page in the book of ancient Chinese religious architecture.
Today Mount Wutaishan is also known as a popular tourist resort, because of its breathtaking views, crystal-clear water and skys, stunning canyons, and peaks, and towering colorful green forests.
Well-known sceneries include the five "flat" top peaks. Legend says they represent 5 wisdoms of Bodhisattva.
- Wanghai Peak (望海峰, literally Overlooking Sea Peak)
- Guayue Peak (挂月峰, literally Hook Moon Peak)
- Jinxiu Peak (锦绣峰, literally Splendor Peak)
- Yedou Peak (叶斗峰, literally Big Dipper Peak)
- Cuiyan Peak (翠岩峰, literally Emerald Rock Peak).
