[edit] Description

Located in southwest China's Sichuan Province, Mount Qingcheng is one of the birthplaces of Taoism. Boasting over 20 temples of Sichuan style of architecture and Taoism sites in dense woods, Mount Qingcheng is often referred to as "the most peaceful and secluded mountain under heaven".

Mount Qingcheng, literally meaning green town in Chinese, is covered with luxuriant and verdant trees. The mountain includes two parts: the front Mt. Qingcheng and the back Mt. Qingcheng. The front mountain is famous for its beautiful scenery and numerous cultural and historic sites, while the back mountain is noted for its paradise-like, primitive and brilliant, gorgeous and mysterious scenery.

[edit] Historical Sites

Known for its secluded tranquility, Mount Qingcheng has numerous Taoist temples and sites along the paths to its peak. Among the most famous are

  • Jianfu Temple: sits at the base of the mountain and under the Zhangren Peak. It is a large, well-preserved Taoist temple from the Tang Dynasty(618-907). Jianfu Temple was repaired for several times in the successive dynasties, and today only two halls and three compounds have been preserved.
  • Tianshi Cave: perchs on a cliff with only a small path leading to its entrance. The temple houses statues of Zhang Daolin, a famous Taoist master who taught here and contributed greatly to spreading Daoism in China. The present Tianshi Cave buildings were built at the end of the Qing Dynasty.
  • Zushi Temple, also known as Zhenwu Temple, was built in the Tang Dynasty. The main hall houses murals of the Eight Immortals and inscriptions left by famous writers through the dynasties.
  • Shangqing Temple: sits near the peak. It was originally established in the Jin Dynasty, but the current temple buildings was constructed in Qing Dynasty.
  • Natural Picture: A wooden building complex. Lying in the arms of high mountains and steep cliffs, it presents a lush and breathtaking view of forests and crystal clear sky. The neighboring Crane-dwelling Village adds even more colors to the picture when the white cranes cruise gracefully among the mountain peaks.
