[edit] Description

Lunan Stone Forest is a set of karst formations in Shilin County, in the Yunnan province of southwest China, approximately 78 km from the city of Kunming.

The forest is covered with peaks, pillars, stalagmites, depressions, underground rivers, and caves. The stone pinnacles rise abruptly from the ground resembling a huge, dense forest.

Many of the stone pinnacles are the subjects of old legends. In the Lesser Stone Forest, one pinnacle resembles a slim and beautiful girl. Seen in silhouette with another stone formation, the girl appears to be carrying a basket on her back.

Another legend is about the famous Ashma, heroine of an epic poem popular among the Sani people. According to the legend, Ashma, a Sani girl, refused to get married to the landlord Rebubala. Together with her true love Ahei, she fought against the landlord. They finally ran away from the landlord and came to the Stone Forest. But Rebubala teamed up with the stone demon, and summoned up a flood and drowned Ashma, and Ashma then turned into the stone peak.

[edit] Area

Stone Forest covers an area of 2,670 square km and is divided into several scenic areas with names like Greater Stone Forest, Lesser Stone forest, Outer Stone Forest, Underground Stone Forest, Stone Forest Lake, and Da Dieshui Falls. The formations are believed to be over 270 million years old. They are a tourist attraction for both foreign and domestic tourists, with bus tours taking tourists there from Kunming. There are many local hotels, shops, and restaurants recently built to accommodate the growing number of tourists.

Each year around the 24th and 25th day of the sixth lunar month, many local Yi people celebrate the Torch Festival, which features folk dances and wrestling competitions.

Lunan Stone Forest is located in the Lunan Yi Nationality Autonomous County, Yunnan Province. It is about 78 km from Kunming, the capital of Yunnan. There are tourist buses going to the Stone Forest from Kunming every day. On the way there is a cave which contains a chamber with stone beds and stone benches on which people can rest. Lying on a stone bed, one can see a strip of sky through a fine crack in the roof of the cave. Tourists can either return to Kunming on the same day or stay overnight at the Stone Forest Hotel.
