[edit] Description

Built in 1996, the Lingshan Grand Buddha is one of the most renowned tourist attractions in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. It is located in the Maji Mountain area near Taihu lake, about one-hour drive from downtown Wuxi. The smaller Lingshan is part of Maji Mountain area, and was named by the famous Great Monk Xuanzang of the Tang Dynasty.

Made in tin and bronze, the Grand Buddha is rounded and over 80 meters high. It was created according to the record of the Buddhist scriptures Tathagata 32 images. Its establishment was one of the biggest events in Chinese Buddhism for about one hundred years. The mark before the Grand Buddha's chest is said to represent solemn and virtue. His hands are said to be printed with "wish", wishing the world happy and welfare. His lifted right hand with the center of the palm pointing outwards is said to symbolize the removal of sufferings. His lifted left hand and outward palm, along with ring-shaped thumb and forefinger is said to signify the giving of happiness. The statue looks delicate, sedate and dignified, showing the Buddha's mercy and compassion.

In addition to Grand Buddha, the compound also includes a pagoda, a giant lotus fountain, and the Lingshan Buddhism Exhibition Hall, which features great paintings, carvings, sculptures and other artwork describing the history of Buddhism.

Nearby lies the historic Xiangfu Temple, a thousand-year old Buddhism temple. During Spring Festival, travelers from around the world come to Xiangfu Temple to listen to the tolling of the bell, believed to bring good luck. The bell, at 3.5 meters in height and weighing in 12 tons, is the biggest in South China.
