Liaoyang stands at 122°35’04” to 123°41’E and 123°41′00” to 41°36’32”N. It covers an area totaling 4731 km². From west to east, it is 92.3km, and 100.3km from south to north.

Liaoyang has a long history of more than 2400 years and splendid culture. It is the hometown of Cao Xueqin, the author of The Dream of Red Mansion, and the ancestral home of Wang Erlie, teacher of Jiaqing Emperor of Qing Dynasty. Meanwhile, it was also the capital city of Later Jin Kingdom. A lot of cultural relics and historical sites have been remained through the long history, such as Frescos in the tombs of Han and Wei Dynasty, the Guangyou Temple of Ming Dynasty, the White Pagoda of Liao Period, Dongjing Town of Later Jin Kingdom, so on and so forth.

The nearest airport to Liaoyang is Shenyang Taoxian International Airport (SHE) (沈阳桃仙国际机场). This is some 60km away and takes about 1 hours to reach by road.

Liaoyang is well connected by train to most major cities in Liaoning, including Shenyang, Anshan, Dalian, Benxi, Panjin and Dandong. The service is frequent inexpensive. Long distance routes connect Liaoyang to much of China with trains terminating as far a field as Shanghai.

Three coaches daily connect Beijing and Liaoyang. There are twice daily coaches to Changchun. Frequent coaches run to and form most major cities in the Province. Coaches to or from Anshan, Benxi and Shenyang run as frequently as the buses circulate. --from wikitravel.org

Liaoyang White Pagoda is one of the six most ancient towers in China. With a height of 70.4 meters, it is the tallest tower in Northeast region. It belongs to historical and cultural site under state protection.

Guangyou Temple, initially built at Eastern Han Dynasty, was one of the earliest temples after Buddhism spread to China. It has been the most influential Buddhism dissemination center in the Northeastern history.

Gongchangling Skiing Field is located in Tanghe scenic spot in Gongchangling District, Liaoyang City, Liaoning Province. It takes up 100 hectares of field, which is one of the biggest skiing fields of in the homeland city suburb with various standard fields.

Camphor Wood Gilded Buddha is situated in the Main Hall of Guangyou Temple. It is the tallest and biggest wood sitting imaged of Sakyamuni Buddha indoor in the world at present. The total height of the Buddha is 21.48 meters.

Hehuogou Provincial Level Forest Park is located in 11 kilometers southeast to Hanling Town Government of Liaoyang County, Liaoning Province. It belongs to Qianshan mountain range of Changbai mountain system. The main sightseeing are canyon landscape, forest landscape and water landscape. The park is also famous for fascinating stones, waterfalls, mountain spring, age-old pine trees

Longfeng Mountain Scenic Spot is located in Xiadahe Town in the east mountain area of Liaoyang County with a planned area of 25 square kilometers. It is adjacent to the famous Tanghe reservoir and Qianshan Mountain Scenic Spots.

Hongwei Square is located in the south side of Hongwei District Government. It is a multifunctional and large-scale leisure square consisting sound, brightness, water, electricity, sculptures and gardens. The total area is about 100,000 square meters. It was completed in 2002.

Qianshan National Park and Benxi Watercave Park are in the Neighbouring cities of Anshan and Benxi. An hours drive north lies Shenyang city, with it's ancient history and UNESCO world heritage sites. About 4 hours drive south is the port city of Dalian - a favourite Chinese tourist destination.
