Kongtongshan Mountain is known as the number one sacred mountain of Taoism in China. The mountain lies near the Gansu-Ningxia border (about 12 kilometers to the west of Pingliang City, Gansu Province), and covers an area of 84 sq. kms. Historical records show that Kongtongshan is the mythical meeting site between the Huangdi (also known as Yellow Emperor) and Guangchengzi (广成子), the Taoist immortal who consulted the Yellow Emperor on how to govern the country.
At the base of the mountain is a lake along with several temples.

- By bus:
- There are at least 4 daily buses going to Pingliang from Xi'an and 6 daily buses from Lanzhou. Once get to Pingliang, you can take buses from the Pingliang West Bus Station to Kongtongshan, which is about 8 miles to the west of the town of Pingliang. The ticket price for the bus from Pingliang to the foothill of Kongtongshan is 15 Yuan, and the cost for the bus from Pingliang into the mountains is 30 Yuan. Taxi from the town to the mountain is also about 30 Yuan. The ticket to enter Kongtongshan is 120 Yuan. Senior or student can claim 50% discount off the regular price.

- There are trains from Xi'an to Pingliang for about 6 hours, or from Lanzhou to Pingliang for about 11.5 hours.

The area is 1100 meter above the sea level. The average yearly temperature is 11 C. Kongtongshan has distinctive four seasons with no cold winter and hot summer. The hottest month is July with a record temperature of 38 ℃, and coldest is Jan with lowest recorded temperature of -19℃.
Summer and autumn are the best seasons to visit Kongtongshan Mountain. The temperature is not too hot, not too cold. But better to bring sun screen during this season.
Spring and winter tend to be cold. If you do decide to visit Kongtongshan during that time, make sure you wear additional layer of warm clothes.
