[edit] Description
Huangdi, or the Yellow Emperor, is considered in Chinese mythology to be the ancestor of all Chinese people. He is a symbol of Chinese civilization, credited with civilizing the earth, teaching people many skills, and inventing numerous useful items.
Legend has it that Huangdi was the leader of his tribe, which went to war with a neighboring tribe lead by Yandi. Huangdi, through his superior military and leadership skills won the war and conquered Yandi's tribe. Legend then says that the Chinese civilization began with these two tribes.
Legend also says that the Yellow Emperor promoted agriculture, and created the wheel, armor and weapons, coined money, ships, the characters, instruments, medicines, counting systems and numerous other items, while his wife showed the womenfolk how to grow mulberry trees and breed silkworms.
Legend also says that Huangdi lived for 118 years. At one time while he was visiting Henan Province, a yellow dragon came down from the Heaven, and tried to take Huangdi away. His people did not want to let him go, so they tried to drag him back by his clothes. However, all that was left were some of the emperor's clothes. His people then buried his clothes at the Mt. Qiaoshan, where they built a tomb in honor of Huangdi.
Huangdi Tomb covers an area of 4 square kilometers (about 1.5 square miles), and is surrounded by a verdant cypress forest and clear running water. The tomb is hidden inside the dense forest formed by more than 8000 cypress trees, most of which having been there for thousands of years.
In front of the tomb is a pavilion, where stands a tall stone stele inscribed with the characters of "Huangdi Tomb". The tomb itself is a 4-meter-high (4.4 yards) mound surrounded by a 1-meter-high (about 1.1 yards) brick-wall.
On the south side stands a Ming Dynasty stone stele that reads "The Qiao Mountain Dragon Rider" (桥山龙驭), a reference to the story of the Yellow Emperor and his family riding into the west on a yellow dragon. The eastern side's stele hallway preserves 57 Imperial stele commissioned by various emperors. On the western side stand returned commemoration stele from Hong Kong and Macao.
Nearer to the Tomb (about 40 meters (about 43.7 yards) before reaching the tomb) lies the "Emperor Wu of Han Immortal Platform" (汉武仙台), where Emperor Wudi (Liu Che) of the Han Dynasty held ceremonies honoring Huangdi after returning from a northern campaign against the Xiongnu.
