Create an account

Refer to 'How to create an account' for illustrated details about how to create an account. The benefit of having an account includes the ability to start a new page, edit semi-protected pages, rename pages, and upload images, etc.

Before starting

Before you start a new page on ChinaTravelGuide, you should always:

  • Search first. Make sure that someone hasn't written a similar guide page before you start one yourself. Choose the title carefully. (see Searching).
  • Review naming conventions. Make sure that you are familiar with the procedure of choosing a name for your article.
    • naming conventions; see also Help:Page name.
    • whether a separate page is justified; perhaps it is better to add the text to a related page (especially if the text is not very long); that page can always be split later, after it has grown.
  • Add links to your future article. Red links are links that point to an article that doesn't exist yet.
  • Follow the guidelines. Try to get a feel for how to best write an article. Our guidelines help ensure that the end result is useful for everyone!

Starting a new page

A new page may be started in one of the following ways:

  • Starting a new page with Search Guides' Go button. You will first need to identify the subject of the guide you want to write. Then enter the subject in the search box on the navigation bar at the left-hand side and click on either "Go" or "Search". If there's already an article on the subject, you'll have direct access to it. Otherwise click "Create a New Article" if your search doesn't produce any articles.
  • Create a link to another page. You can find a word or name that ought to have an article of its own in an existing page, you can simply put it in double square brackets, [[like this]]. After saving the page, that word will link to the article, or will link to a form where that article may be created.
  • Start from an existing link (red link). Sometimes you'll come across red links (links to pages that haven't been written yet (links that look like this)). Clicking on the red link to go to the new article's editing page, and start typing in the edit box. When you're done, click the "Show preview" button to see your article and to find any mistakes. Then click the "Save page" button when you are done.
  • Start a page through the URL. You can also go directly to a new page by adding its name to the ChinaTravelGuide URL to create an address: http://ChinaTravelGuide.com/wiki/Sample_title – You replace the string "Sample_title" with your own title. Then, click on the "edit this page" link, and begin typing your new article.
  • Start an Attraction/Hotel/Restaurant page through the inputbox. When you search an Attraction/Hotel/Restaurant, at the top of the search result page, you will see an input box where you can enter a new article about the attraction/hotel/restaurant. You can start a new Attraction/Hotel/Restaurant page after you enter its name. Please follow the naming convention for Attraction/Hotel/Restaurant.

Test in sandbox

  • Test in the sandbox. For new members, you can edit the sandbox, add your link, and then click the link to add your new page. (The caveat is that the sandbox is occasionally erased by the administrators, so be sure to back up any important work!)

Tip: Try not to make your new articles orphans!
