[edit] Overview

Guilin (桂林) is medium-size city, located in northeast of Guangxi. It has a subtropical climate with a yearly average temperature of 19°C. The city occupies an area of 27,809 sq km with a population of 4.84 million (per 2000 census). Besides the Han majority, Guangxi and Guilin are home to 28 different ethnic minorities, including Zhuang (壮族), Miao (苗族), Yao (瑶族), Dong (侗族).

Guilin got its name because it is a "forest of Sweet Osmanthus" (玉桂成林). According to geological research, the area was an ocean in ancient times, but the limestones at the bottom of the ocean were raised by the earth's crustal movement, and became many picturesque limestone mountains and formations. Today the city is surrounded by two rivers and four lakes, studded with shear sided Karst mountains. Guilin's unique scenery earned its reputation as "By water, by mountains, earth's fairest, Guilin" (桂林山水甲天下).

Guilin is close to many other scenic places in the region, including Longsheng famous for the Longji rice terraces (龙脊梯田), the Lijiang River (漓江), and Yangshuo (阳朔), a small city downstream form Guilin. This makes Guilin an excellent base for exploring the northern part of Guangxi.

Guilin has many western-style hotels to accommodate the visitors. It's a beautiful city with few air pollutions.

[edit] History

Guilin belongs to Chu (楚) during the Warring States Period (战国时代) – [403 BC–221 BC]. In about 214 BC, after Emperor Qin united the area known as Guilin County (桂林郡), canals were built to connect Xiangjiang River (湘江) and Lijiang River (漓江), and Guilin became an ever important city to transport food supplies, and other materials.

The city was known as Shian (始安) in the Northern and Southern Dynasties (南北朝) period, and was then renamed as Guizhou (桂州) in the Tang Dynasty about 618 AD. The name of Guilin first appeared in Poet Dufu's (杜甫) poem <寄杨五桂州谭>:"五岭皆炎热,宜人独桂林". After the Song Dynasty, the city was the political, economic, and cultural center in Southwest China, and was known as the Capital of the southwest (西南会府). Guilin's nickname is Rongcheng (榕城), derived from Ming Dynasty's poem "兰根出土长斜挂,榕树城门却倒生" by Yangji (杨基).

Guilin boasts a long history of a variety of cultures, including the pre-historical culture of Zhenpiyan (甄皮岩), Qin Dynasty's water conservancy projects of Ling Canal (灵渠), Ming Dynasty's Fanwang culture (藩王文化) as shown by Jingjiang Royal Tombs (靖江王墓), and the natural scenery culture of cliff stone carving (摩崖石刻) and landscape poetry (山水诗词).

[edit] Night Life & Entertainment

Ethnic dance performances are popular in some high-end hotels catering to foreign visitors. If the timing is good, you may also catch the minority festival. Also the acrobatic and minority show at the Spring Theater near Ronghu Lake is very popular and very entertaining.

Another interesting thing to do is to take the night boats to watch the cormorant fishing, which is usually done at night by husbands so their other halves can take the catch to market the next morning. The light on the fisherman's bamboo raft first attracts fishes. Then the birds are released, jump into the water and come back to the raft with their beaks stuffed with fishes, only to be taken by the fishermen!

Those adventurous can try Bungee jump and rock climbing. There are rock climbing places in Yangshuo for the beginners and there are ones for those experienced.
