[edit] History
The Great Wall, literally meaning: "Long Fortress", is an ancient Chinese fortification, built to protect against the invasions from the Huns in the north. Sections of the Great Wall were originally built as a defensive fortification by the three states: Yan, Zhao and Qin in the Period of Spring and Autumn (春秋时代) – [722 BC – 481 BC] and Warring States Period (战国时代) – [403 BC – 221 BC]. After Emperor Qin Shihuang unified China in 221 BC, he successfully had the walls joined together to become "the Great Wall". It was later renovated and extended by several later dynasties, and got most of its current shape during the Ming Dynasty.
The Great Wall stretches over a formidable 6,400 km, from the boundary with Korea on the Yalu River (鸭绿江) to the Gobi desert (戈壁滩). The Ming Dynasty Great Wall starts on the eastern end at Shanhai Pass (山海关), Qinhuangdao (秦皇岛), in Hebei (河北) Province next to Bohai Gulf, and ends on the western end at Jiayu Pass (嘉峪关) located in northwest Gansu (甘肃) Province.
