Grape Valley, Turpan, is located on the western side of the Flaming Mountain, about 13 km (or 8 miles) to east of the city of Turpan. This green paradise runs 8 km (or 5 miles) from north to south with a width of 0.5 km (or 0.3 miles), and covers an area of almost 1000 acres with layer upon layer of grapes. The valley is often much cooler than the sweltering Turpan in the summer time.
In early July through August, the Grape Valley is blanketed with grape fields crisscrossed by trellised walkways. In the valley you will also find a park with patios and outdoor tables where you can eat the grapes and other fruit or enjoy a delicious meal complemented by the locally produced wine.
Among the grapes grown here are the famous seedless white grape, the manaizi or "mare's nipple" grape, and red and black grapes in the fall. The grape fairyland also produces peaches, apricots, apples, pomegranates, pears, and various types of melon.
Grapes were first grown in Turpan over 2,000 years ago. Along with Turpan's melons and wines, these delicious fruits are the region's specialty products, and were often presented as tribute to the Tang Dynasty imperial court.
Today, Grape Valley is a top tourist destination in Xinjiang. People come here to sample juicy and luscious grapes, taste the local wines, relax under the vintage frames, enjoy the performances by the beautiful Uigar girls in their ethic costumes. Visitors will need to get prepared to be fully intoxicated by this refreshing palace of grapes, as they will hear from a well-known Chinese song, "...Turpan's grapes is ripe; Anarhan's heart is ecstatic..."!
