[edit] Description
Dazu Stone Sculptures is located in Dazu county of Chongqing. There are more than 50,000 stone sculptures scattered in 40 different locations in the reputed "Land of Stone Sculptures". Most of the high-value collections are located at the foothills of Baoding Hill and North Hill.
The Dazu Stone Sculptures was declared as A World Cultural And Natural Heritage in 1999 because of "their aesthetic quality, their rich diversity of subject matter, both secular and religious, and the light that they shed on everyday life in China during this period." The sculptures provide outstanding evidence of the harmonious synthesis of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism.

[edit] History
Dazu County covers an area of 1,400 square kilometers (about 540.5 square miles), and has a history of 1,230 years dating back to 758 AD during the Tang Dynasty (618-907).
The earliest carvings date back to 650 A.D. during the early Tang Dynasty (618-907). Many sculptures were built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and the Qing Dynasty (1616-1911). However, most well-known sculptures were carved during the Song Dynasty. Zhao Zhifeng, a Buddhist monk of the Song Dynasty, dedicated 70 years of his life to the work on the elaborate sculptures and carvings on Mount Baoding.
Among more than 5,000 figures and over 100,000 Chinese characters of inscriptions and epigraphs, buddhist statues dominate. But there are also the Taoist and the Confucian stone carvings.
