[edit] Description

Konglin (or The Confucian Forest) is about 2 kilometers (1.24 miles) to the north of the county seat of Qufu, Shandong Province. It is the largest, the oldest and the best preserved clan cemetery in China. It was the family cemetery of Confucius and his descendants for over 80 generations. The forest is, in many ways, “a walking tour into the Chinese past.” because of its long history and numerous writings in the form of inscriptions on stele from different historical times.

Konglin covers an area of over 700 acres, and is enclosed by layers of brick walls with a total length of 7 kilometers (4.35 miles). Konglin is not only a clan cemetery, but also an ancient and historic botanical garden. It is said that each Confucian student planted a tree from his home town. As a result, Konglin has over 10,000 different species of trees.

Visitors will have to first walk a long divine road (about 1,200 meters) flanked by mandarins and sculpted animals which serve the purpose of symbolically protecting the tombs. They will then have to pass through several stone arches, stone bridges, and other archways to finally reach Confucius' tomb, which is about 6 meters tall. To the right side of Confucius' tomb are his son, Kong Li, and his grand-son, Kong Ji's tombs. Inside this tomb compound, there are numerous stone inscriptions, tablets, stele with various sizes indicating the rank and seniority of the buried. The entire Konglin has over 100,00 tombs, and had served as the Kong family cemetery for over 2500 years.

When Confucius was buried, the cemetery was of a relatively small size. Later with the rising of Confucius' status, much of the cemetery has been expanded, repaired and restored several times during Han Dynasty, Song, Ming an Qing dynasties. Today the cemetery's long history and exceptionally well-preserved condition make it among the rarest in the world.
