China Drinking Water
From ChinaTravelGuide
When you travel in China, it is not safe to drink the local tap water, even in high-end hotels.
However, most hotels provide water dispenser in each room, which supplies both cool and hot waters, while others may be equipped with a water heater pot (like a coffee pot), which allows you to boil the tap water before being consumed. Some high-end hotels may also supply bottled mineral water for free or for a nominal charge. Bottled mineral water and other types of beverages and soft drinks are readily available in area attraction stores, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, and many street shops for about 2~3 yuans per bottle.
In some cases, you may see locals drink the tap water. The water may be safe to the locals who are used to it. But that does not mean it's safe to the travelers. All water contains different sets of microbes and mineral deposits. If you aren't used to a country's drinking water, then you may get sick just because it is different. Be safe, buy bottled water cheap at the shops.
