[edit] Why am I seeing many boxes, question marks, blanks inside parenthesis or junk letters in many articles?

Many articles on ChinaTravelGuide.com contain Chinese characters. If your computer and browser do not have support for East Asian characters, you will see these strange letters. You can simply ignore these letters if you are not interested in the Chinese words, or follow the below article to have your computer support Chinese language.
Also make sure your browser's encoding is set to Unicode (UTF-8) to display the Chinese Characters, as all the contents under ChinaTravelGuide.com are UTF-8 encoded to support international languages.

[edit] How can I embed an external video (YouTube, Google Video, DailyMotion, etc.) on the site?

[edit] embed on wiki pages

Use the following tag to embed videos
  • {{#ev:service|id}} -or-
  • {{#ev:service|id|width}}
where:
  • service is the name of a video sharing service.
  • id is the id of the video to include
  • width (optional) is the width in pixels of the viewing area (height will be determined automatically)
For example, to include the "Beijing Olympic Games" YouTube video, you'd enter:
{{#ev:youtube|k7FHTgIm3X4}}
And if you wanted scaled down to thumbnail size, you could use:
{{#ev:youtube|k7FHTgIm3X4|100}}
Refer to How to embed YouTube videos for details.
Make sure that you follow the "Term of Use" of various video hosting sites.

[edit] embed youtube video on forums

The forum does not support wikitext. So the above wiki syntax will not work on forums. To embed your youtube video, simply use the following syntax:

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxxyyyzzz[/youtube]

where xxxyyyzzz is youtube's video id.

[edit] How can I upload an image onto the site?

A typical image tag is like [[Image:MyImageFileName.jpg|thumb|250px|left|captions about this image]]. You can modify the size, the format (.jpg, .png, .gif, etc.), and location (left, right) where you want to place the image. Images should always go with articles, otherwise they may get "lost" in the ocean of image files.

You can first embed the image tag inside the page, save the page, and then click directly on the embedded image sign on the article to upload images (you will need to log in first). Or you can click on "Upload file" in the left-hand column of the main page to upload the images.

Below are some tips about uploading images onto ChinaTravelGuide.com

  1. Use descriptive names for the images to avoid ambiguity. Don't use names too generic as it may be in conflict with other names.
  2. Renaming a file is not possible once it is uploaded.
  3. All uploaded files have an image description page. Please include info such as author, source, date, what it is, and license info. If the image is uploaded under the doctrine of free/fair use, you need to place the words fair use or a more specific fair-use template in the summary.
  4. Image names are case-specific. If an image is called MyPhoto.jpg, then it will not show up when you search for Myphoto.jpg or MyPhoto.JPG.
  5. Read the License Selection guidance page for information on successful uploads.
