Changchun is situated at the heart of Songliao Plains in Northeast China at 124'18" - 127'02" east longitude, 43'05" - 45'15" north latitude.

Changchun occupies a total area of 20,571 square kilometers, including an urban area of 2,583 square kilometers. The city is sandwiched between two other northeast provinces in China, Heilongjiang Province to the north and Liaoning Province to the south. The city is at the crisscross point of the third east-westward "Europe-Asia Continental Bridge". Changchun is 250 - 350 meters above the sea level.

Changchun region is composed of mountainous regions, mesas and plains, accounting for 9%, 41% and 50% of the total area respectively.

The region is also dotted with 222 rivers and lakes, most of which are the tributaries of Songhua River, Rinma River and Yitong River. Mushi River, Yinma River, Yitong River, Shuangyang River, Wukai River and Xinkai River run from east to west all the way into the lower reach of Songhua River.

Changchun was established only about 200 years ago. In 1800, Emperor Jiaqing of the Qing Dynasty selected a small village on the east bank of the Yitong River and named it as "Changchun Ting". It was later promoted as "Changchun Fu" in 1889.

In 1930, the Japanese Army invaded Northeast China, and established the state of Manchuria. Changchun was then selected as its capital, and was later renamed as Xinjing (new capital).

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Changchun has transformed itself into the center of China's automotive industry. Changchun is also known for its advanced science and education, and the trees, gardens and forests surrounding the city.

Changchun has been known by many nicknames.

  • City of Automobiles (汽车城):
Like Detroit in US, Changchun is an auto city in China. It is the biggest automobile research and development center in China. The first Chinese truck, Jiefang truck, and the first Chinese car (Hongqi or Red Flag) were made FAW (First Automotive Works) Group headquartered in Changchun. In addition, it also holds joint ventures with Audi, Volkswagen, and Toyota.
Changchun hosts the yearly Changchun International Automobile Fair.
  • Spring City of Northland (北国春城):
Changchun has distinct four seasons with pleasant weather, and is often called the Spring City of Northland.
  • Forest City (森林城):
40% of Changchun is covered with trees, bushes, and forest. Jingyuetan National Forest Park (zh:长春净月潭国家森林公园), is the largest man-made forest in Asia, and one of the top attractions in Northeast China.
  • City of Green Food (绿色食品城):
The favorable weather and ample sunshine help produce many crops, such as corns, soybeans, and other vegetables.
  • City of Films (电影城):
Changchun Film Studio was the cradle of China's film industry. Changchun Film Century City is known as Hollywood in the east. The studio has produced and translated over 1000 films.
  • City of Science and Technology (科教文化城):
Changchun hosts 28 universities and colleges, and 103 research institutes. More than 10% of the population are college students.

Changchun Longjia International Airport (长春龙嘉国际机场) is located between Changchun and Jilin City. The airport is 21 km to the east of Changchun, and 62 km to Jilin City. It has flights to cities across eastern and central China, as well as international flights to Seoul, South Korea and Tokyo, Japan.

Changchun is served by the central Changchun Railway Station (长春站), and two other smaller stations. Trains depart here to other northeast cities such as Jilin City, Harbin, Shenyang, and Dalian, as well as Beijing.

The fare for most regular public buses is 1 RMB. Changchun is also served by one traditional tram route (route 54).
