[edit] Description

Changbaishan National Nature Reserve is located in Jilin Province, bordering North Korea. The mountain covers a total area of 2000 square km, and has a height of 2,744 m (9,003 ft) at its highest peak. It's the highest mountain in North China. The primitive-forests-covered reserve is an excellent tourist destination.

Changbaishan National Nature Reserve was designated by UNESCO as a nature reserve in 1979. It offers a very large selection of flora: a total of an impressive 80 trees and over 300 medicinal plant species, such as the rare Changbai larch, Korean pines and Japanese yews, Mongolian oaks, dwarf birch. It's also a well-known wildlife zone, and home to such animals as Siberian tigers, leopards, lynx, brown bears, the shy deers, gorals, wild pigs, otters. Rare, endangered birds like hazel grouse, black storks, mandarin ducks and oriental storks also abound.

A large stunning crater lake, called Heaven Lake (天池), sits atop the mountain. It was formed centuries ago by volcanic eruptions. Today, the oval lake is about 13km in circumference and about 250m deep, and is surrounded by 16 mountain peaks.

[edit] Direction

The reserve can be reached through Baihe (a small town some 20km south of the nature reserve's southern entrance), or Songjianghe (a village 40 km west of the Nature Reserve).

Visitors can get to Baihe by bus via Yanji or train through Tonghua. From Baihe, buses take you to Changbaishan's vehicle switching station, about 17 miles past the main gate. From the vehicle switching station, Jeeps/SUVs travel the rest of the way to the hot springs at the base of the mountain.

The Songjianghe route can be adventurous and occasionally have rock slides, but offers more beauty with forests of trees gradually changing to meadows and flowers (in spring and early summer).

[edit] Best Time to Visit

Temperature varies widely in Changbaishan area during the year. It is below freezing for eight months from early October to late May, but can reach 18°C during the summer. The annual average temperature at the peak is about -8.3°C with Jan average of -24°C (-11°F) and July average of 10°C (50°F).

The best time to visit is early September.
