[edit] Description
The Bund (外滩) is one of the top attractions in Shanghai. For over one hundred years, the Bund has been regarded as the symbol of Shanghai. It stretches almost one mile along the west bank of the Huangpu River. The Bund begins at Jinling East Road in the south and extends north to Waibaidu Bridge, where the Suzhou Creek connects with the Huangpu River.
Across the river is the newly developed Pudong commercial district, where the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and the Jin Mao Tower are the most prominent buildings.
[edit] History
The Bund is famous for its colonial-era buildings. It was initially a British settlement, but was soon merged with the American settlement to become international settlement in late 19th century. It became the China's financial center in 1940s.

[edit] What to see
- The Bund (外滩) - Colonial-era European buildings, and also modern skyscrapers like Oriental Pearl TV Tower (东方明珠电视塔), Jinmao Tower (金茂大厦), across the Huangpu River.
- Customs House - The huge clock in the tower, from which Shanghai takes its time, is known as "Big-Ch'ing".
- HSBC Building - once called "the most luxurious building between the Suez Canal and the Bering Strait" when first completed in 1923. Now home to the Pudong Development Bank.
- Huangpu Park (黄浦公园) - home of the People's Hero Monument and the Bund Historical Museum, it started its life as Public Garden in 1886. During years between 1890 and 1928, "The Gardens are reserved for the foreign community". The banning of Chinese from Huangpu Park has remained as one of the many moments of humiliation of Chinese people by the Western powers in the 19th and early 20th century.
- Pedestrian Tunnel undercross the Huangpu River (黄浦江人行隧道)
A pedestrian transit tunnel croses the Huangpu River from the Bund. Visitors boarding on special vehicles slowly traveling along the tunnel can watch the light effects projected onto the walls of the tunnel.
