[edit] Attractions

  • Benxi Lake, located under the western cliffs of Mount Woyun in Xihu District of Benxi, originally was called Beixi Lake or Baixi Lake. During Emperor Yongzheng's reign in the Qing Dynasty, the name was changed to Benxi Lake. Benxi City was named after Benxi Lake. The lake lies in a cave covering about 20 square meters of water area, the smallest in the world. An ancient temple, established during the Ming Dynasty, stands outside the cave, adorned with statues and painted murals. Stone steps lead up to the nearby mountain, which is known for its historic ruins and stalactite and stalagmite caves.
  • Mount Wunu, also called Mount Wulong or Mount Wuyu, is located on the west bank of the Hun River in Huanren County. The mountain's current name was given as a tribute to the five legendary women who stationed troops on the mountain and built up a fortressed city there so as to keep invaders out. Beautiful scenery and the remains of Wunu Temple await those who make the climb (or take the cable car) up the 824 meter high peak. On the northern face, the ancient city can be found, intact, thanks to preservation efforts led by historic societies.
  • Mount Guanmen, 48 kilometers away from Benxi urban area and 13 kilometers south of Benxi Water Cave, is located in Benxi Manchu Autonomous County. The mountain, named after its two peaks shaped like a gate standing opposite each other, has often been praised for its majestic beauty. Trees, flowers, and multiple waterfalls decorate the mountain, which offers amazing views from its top.
  • Benxi Water Cave Scenic Spot (本溪水洞风景名胜区), formed as a huge limestone cave brimming with water some 4 to 5 million years ago when the earth's crust shifted, lies by the bank of the Taizi River in Benxi County, 35 kilometers east of Benxi city. The cave's entrance, which is 7 meters high and 25 meters wide, in a shape of a half-moon, faces the north and is embraced by mountains and rivers all around.
  • Benxi Guanmenshan National Forest Park (本溪关门山国家森林公园)
