Beijing Olympics
From ChinaTravelGuide
Beijing (北京) was awarded the 2008 Summer Olympic Games (the Games of the XXIX Olympiad) by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on July 13, 2001. This is the first time in history that a Chinese city hosts the Olympics games. There are a total of 28 major and 302 minor competitive events. The opening ceremony will commence at 08:08:08 pm Beijing local time.
The logo for the game is titled "Dancing Beijing", depicting a stylized Chinese character (京, or capital in Chinese), referring to the host city. The mascots are the five Fuwa, each representing one color of the Olympic rings. The slogan is "One World, One Dream", calling upon the world to unite in the Olympic spirit.
The Chinese people and government have made great preparations for an outstanding Olympics. Those efforts range from large-scale construction of venues ("Bird's Nest", and the "Water Cube" are the most famous), the dramatic measures to control air pollution both in Beijing and in neighboring areas, to the attempt to control the rain during the games.
